Nickel markets have been the primary driver of stainless price direction this year, and July is no exception. After surging to multi-year highs near $19,350-20,000/t in May on severe Indonesian mining restrictions, LME nickel futures tumbled nearly 14% in June on quota-easing rumours, then stabilised in the low $16,000s/t before recovering to $17,280/t by July 23. TradingEconomics reports the metal is up 11.7% year-on-year, supported by rising supply risks in Indonesia where government mining quota reviews have restricted ore availability for smelters, and surging sulfur costs tied to Middle East tensions that compound production expenses for the HPAL processing chain.

The refined nickel market presents a contested balance picture. INSG and Argus project a 2026 refined surplus of 261-288 kt, driven by Indonesian mixed hydroxide precipitate capacity almost doubling to 862 kt/yr of contained nickel. But SMM data points to a tighter refined balance, with INSG estimating a 32,000-tonne deficit for refined metal specifically. LME stocks stand around 274,300 tonnes as of mid-July, elevated but below the March peak of 287,550 tonnes—the highest in over four years.

For 304 buyers, the nickel pullback from Q1 highs has created a window. Stainless prices in June were roughly 4-6% below March peaks, according to industry assessments from Walmay Stainless. Mills with strong scrap intake, particularly US and European electric arc furnace producers, are seeing a modest input-cost tailwind on 304 as scrap availability helps cap costs. Asian mills running on nickel pig iron rather than scrap are passing through nickel savings faster but lack the scrap-driven cushion. The net effect: 304 offers are soft enough that buyers can negotiate.

316 tells a different story. Molybdenum oxide jumped to $23.43/lb in January 2026 and spiked to $36/lb in the US after the Langeloth facility fire, with SMM forecasting a 13,000-tonne deficit in 2026. Moly-bearing stainless scrap is being hoarded by mills who do not want to buy expensive primary molybdenum oxide. The CRU Stainless Steel Service noted in Q3 2025 that if molybdenum supply starts to tighten and science and energy sectors represent a larger share of demand, the 316 premium over 304 could increase from 15-18% to 20-22% by end of 2026—a forecast that now looks prescient.

Regional demand dynamics reinforce the grade divergence. North American stainless demand remains steady from construction, automotive, and energy sectors, aided by infrastructure refurbishment and sustainability mandates that favour higher-alloy grades. Europe continues to struggle: German 316 prices averaged just $2,855/t in Q1, dragged down by subdued automotive output and weak construction activity. China's stainless output rose 5.4% in H1 2026, adding supply pressure even as domestic demand is not equally strong, particularly in the 300-series segment.

Near-term catalysts to watch: Indonesia's July mining quota verdict is the most consequential variable for nickel and therefore 300-series costs. If Jakarta confirms no broad quota increase, nickel could push toward $18,000/t, putting upward pressure on 304 offers. If quotas loosen, another leg down toward $16,000/t would extend the 304 buying window. For 316, the molybdenum supply outlook remains the swing factor—no new primary moly capacity is expected online in 2026, so the deficit-driven price floor should hold.

What this means for buyers

If you buy 304, act now but negotiate. Prices are 4-6% below March highs and mills have room to move on volume orders. Push for base price and alloy surcharge to be itemised separately in every quote—a single all-in number hides whether the supplier is passing through the nickel softness or pocketing it. For 316 and duplex grades, lock pricing now. The molybdenum deficit is structural, not cyclical, and the Langeloth fire-induced supply shock has not fully resolved. Mills are hoarding moly-bearing scrap, which means replacement costs for 316 are rising even as base demand remains steady. Multi-month fixed-price contracts for 316 are worth the premium over浮动 pricing given the moly uncertainty. In both grades, insist on XRF verification for critical applications—the spread between 304 and 316 makes mislabelling a real risk in the current market. A quote from a mill or distributor in this market should always break out base price, alloy surcharge, and any extras for finish, width, or thickness.
