China's antimony market has found a temporary equilibrium as production disruptions offset persistently weak demand. Shanghai Metals Market assessed 99.65% antimony metal at approximately $15,940 per tonne as of July 2, down sharply from $19,563 in June, marking an 18.5% month-over-month decline.

The catalyst for stabilization is the reported output halt at Chenzhou Mining, a major Chinese producer. According to industry sources, the suspension has removed some supply from the market, providing a floor under prices that had been sliding since Q1. However, a Hunan-based producer told Metalnomist that domestic demand remains weak and that some producers still hold hundreds of tonnes of metal stocks, suggesting inventories remain ample even with fresh supply tightening.

European prices tell a different story. The IMARC price index for antimony in Europe reached approximately $33.7/kg in July, up 4.4% from June, reflecting persistent regional premiums while Northeast Asia saw a 12.3% decline to $17.4/kg. The price gap between Chinese and international antimony markets, a hallmark of China's export control regime since September 2024, remains substantial but is narrowing as global prices decline from mid-2025 highs.

Demand from the largest end-use segment — flame retardants, which account for roughly half of global antimony consumption — remains soft. Weak building and industrial activity in both China and developed markets has weighed on procurement of antimony trioxide for plastics, textiles, and cable insulation. Solar glass production, an emerging growth driver for sodium antimonate, has also slowed under China's anti-involution policies in the PV sector.

Despite near-term headwinds, the structural demand base is resilient. Defense applications, including ammunition primers and infrared sensors, represent a growing and inelastic consumption segment. Fastmarkets notes that long-term energy transition trends will continue to underpin rigid antimony demand from PV glass, while data center construction supports flame retardant PVC demand. The global antimony market was valued at $1.87 billion in 2026, per Research and Markets, with a projected CAGR of 6% to 2032.

What this means for buyers

Antimony buyers are navigating a market that has normalized from the panic-driven peaks of early 2026 but remains structurally altered by China's export controls. The current window offers moderate spot procurement leverage: China domestic prices near $16,000/t are the most competitive level since before the September 2024 export controls triggered the price spike. For flame retardant and lead-acid battery buyers with Asian supply chains, this is a reasonable entry point for H2 2026 requirements. However, three risk factors argue against aggressive long-term commitments: (1) Chenzhou Mining's halt duration is uncertain — a prolonged shutdown could tighten supply; (2) European prices at $33,700/t indicate that non-Chinese buyers still pay a substantial geopolitical premium; (3) Defense demand is structurally tightening the market. Recommendation: Buy 3-6 month spot requirements at current China domestic levels if accessible. Western buyers should maintain 30-60 day safety stocks and explore Southeast Asian or Central Asian supply alternatives.
