US anhydrous ammonia fell below $1,000/t for the first time in 17 weeks, settling at $967/t in mid-July as the six-week downward trend in nitrogen prices continued. The commodity, which spent the spring above the four-figure threshold due to the Iran conflict and elevated natural gas costs, has dropped 11% month-on-month. The decline mirrors a broader nitrogen correction: UAN32 fell 15% month-on-month to $465/t, while urea slipped under $700/t for the first time since March.
The natural gas disconnect. The correction in ammonia prices comes despite persistent elevation in natural gas costs — the primary feedstock. Henry Hub gas remains elevated on Iran war risk premiums and strong LNG export demand. The disconnect is explained by three factors: global ammonia demand entered its seasonal post-spring hiatus; some Middle East production capacity that was idled during the worst of the Hormuz disruption has partially restarted; and European ammonia importers have drawn down inventories built during the spring buying panic.
Global seaborne ammonia remains tight. Despite the domestic US correction, the global seaborne ammonia market is not out of the woods. Procurement Resource reports Chinese ammonia at ~$361/t and Indian ammonia at ~$428/t as of May, with tightness driven by the fact that 20-30% of global ammonia trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz. India's government confirmed on July 24 that ammonia imports have been "particularly impacted" by the West Asian conflict, along with phosphoric acid and sulfur.
Supply-side math: capacity additions are coming, but slowly. Global ammonia capacity is projected to grow from roughly 240 Mt in 2023 to ~290 Mt by 2030, per IFA and GlobalData projections. However, building a world-scale greenfield ammonia synthesis plant requires $2-4 billion in capital and 4-6 years to complete. Near-term additions are concentrated in the US Gulf (CF Industries and Nutrien expansions), the Middle East (Saudi Arabia's Ma'aden), and India — all regions with either cheap gas feedstock or strategic food-security mandates.
Europe remains the premium market. European ammonia prices remain the highest globally, with IMARC's index showing liquid ammonia at $0.75/kg (~$750/t) in Western Europe, compared to $0.33/kg (~$330/t) in Northeast Asia. The European premium reflects both higher natural gas costs (TTF structurally above Henry Hub) and the impact of EU carbon border adjustment mechanism costs, which add $30-60/t to imported ammonia.
Analyst views: correction is seasonal, not structural. Bull case ($1,000-1,100/t): the US correction is the seasonal lull; autumn application demand in the Northern Hemisphere plus Latin American buying will push anhydrous back above $1,000/t by September. Bear case ($800-900/t): the structural capacity overhang (global capacity 20% above demand) combined with energy normalization post-Iran conflict would pull prices toward production cost. Base case ($900-1,000/t through Q4): seasonal demand trough continues through August, then moderate recovery as South American buying and Northern Hemisphere fall application re-enter the market.
The clean ammonia wildcard. Global clean ammonia projects (blue and green) represent a potential 50+ Mt/year of capacity in various stages of development, mostly targeting hydrogen transport and power generation rather than fertilizer use. If these projects achieve commercial-scale production, they could divert conventional ammonia supply away from agricultural end markets, tightening the fertilizer-grade market. Conversely, if clean ammonia demand materializes slower than expected, those projects could dump conventional ammonia byproduct into the fertilizer market, depressing prices.
The current $967/t US anhydrous presents a buying opportunity for Q4 coverage — the question is how long the window stays open. The seasonal trough typically runs through August, but three structural factors argue against waiting: (1) the Hormuz risk premium is embedded in freight rates and shows no sign of dissipating, (2) European destocking means autumn replenishment will be concentrated, creating a demand spike, and (3) the base case has prices recovering to $950-1,000/t by Q4. For buyers with storage capacity, covering 60-70% of Q4 needs at current levels and leaving the balance for opportunistic spot purchases in late-August is a reasonable strategy. The risk is asymmetric: limited downside to $900/t (production cost floor) versus potential $200+/t upside from a Hormuz escalation or Russian gas curtailment.
