The ferrochrome market is performing well in mid-2026. What this means for buyers

For CPOs managing ferrochrome procurement, the central strategic question is whether to fix or index in the current market. With prices in the $1,200-1,500/t band, the market is at a level that covers most producers' costs while not being so elevated as to be unsustainable. The case for 12-month fixed-price contracts is reasonable if chrome ore and power costs remain stable. However, the CBAM factor introduces a new variable: EU-exposed buyers should evaluate splitting volumes between conventional HC FeCr and low-carbon FeCr, which carries a premium of 5-15% but hedges against CBAM cost escalation.
