PET bottle-grade resin markets are navigating one of the most challenging supply-demand environments in years. Asia spot prices for bottle-grade chips (IV 0.80) are trading at USD 900-1,000/MT FOB China, near the bottom of the cycle, as structural overcapacity continues to pressure producer margins.
China domestic quotes from major producers including Jiangsu Sanfangxiang and Zhejiang Wankai stood at 7,190-7,480 RMB/ton ex-works in mid-July, according to market reports. After stripping out VAT and freight, this corresponds to the low-to-mid USD 900s/ton FOB range. India bottle-grade PET is quoted around 1,080-1,200 USD/MT, with domestic producers struggling to compete against Asian import cargoes.
The overcapacity is structural and deep. Global bottle-grade PET capacity is approximately 42 million tonnes per year against demand estimated at 32-33 million tonnes, implying a utilization rate near 76-78%. New capacity additions in China and Southeast Asia continue to outpace demand growth of 3-4% annually. The result: producers in Asia are operating at negative to breakeven margins, with no relief in sight as several more projects are in the commissioning pipeline.
Feedstock costs provide no buffer. Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), the primary raw material, is trading around USD 720/ton CFR China, depressed by massive PTA overcapacity in China. Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) has fallen approximately 8% quarter-on-quarter to roughly USD 550/ton CFR China, tracking weaker crude oil and ethylene. The combined feedstock cost for PET production is estimated at USD 780-830/ton, meaning current PET prices barely cover conversion costs.
Demand growth is being driven primarily by the packaging sector, with bottled water, carbonated soft drinks, and personal care applications showing steady 3-4% annual growth in Asia and emerging markets. However, this growth is insufficient to absorb the capacity additions. In Europe and North America, rPET (recycled PET) mandates are eroding virgin PET demand growth, particularly in markets with bottle deposit schemes and recycled content requirements.
Bull case: A sustained recovery in crude oil would lift PX and PTA costs, pushing the entire PET cost curve higher. Seasonal pre-summer bottling demand in the Northern Hemisphere typically tightens the market in Q1. Any unplanned cracker or PTA plant outage could trigger a short-covering rally, as converters maintain lean inventories.
Bear case: The wave of new Chinese and Southeast Asian PET capacity hitting the market through late 2026 and into 2027 has no natural off-ramp. Chinese operating rates are expected to remain below 70%. If crude oil continues its post-Hormuz decline, both PTA and MEG costs fall further, and PET prices follow.
Base case: PET prices hover in the USD 880-1,050/ton FOB China range through Q3, with the bias slightly downward. The market needs either significant capacity rationalization or a demand acceleration to shift the equilibrium.
PET buyers have rare structural leverage. This market stays a buyer's market until capacity shuts down. Target 6-12 month contracts priced off the CFR China or FOB China benchmark. Include a floor to protect suppliers from extreme lows. Do not include a ceiling. You want the downside. For large-volume bottlers, consider formula-based pricing linked to the PTA/MEG spread plus a fixed conversion fee. That keeps cost structure transparent. Producers cannot pad margins when feedstock costs fall. The rPET substitution risk is real: European and North American buyers should model the virgin PET premium over rPET, as recycled-content mandates tighten. For Asian buyers exporting finished goods to Europe, monitor the EU's recycled content requirements under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. Build inventory during the seasonal September-October weakness. Consume during the pre-summer tightening.
