Iron Ore 62% Intelligence Report

August 18, 2026 · Intelligence Report · Iron Ore 62% Fe (SGX, DCE, CME)
BUYER POSITION: OPPORTUNISTIC

Iron ore 62% Fe holds at $94.95/mt CFR China (Aug 17) — down 11.4% YTD and 1.4% above its 13-month low of $93.66 (Aug 3). THE STRUCTURAL DRIVER: a seaborne surplus that is still building. Simandou ramps to 5-10 Mt in 2026 (15 Mt per S&P), Vale, Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue all guided to record or near-record supply, and Australia/ Brazil exports reach a combined ~1,351 Mt in 2026e. THE NEW SIGNAL: China's 47-port stockpile saw its first weekly drawdown since July (174.22 Mt on Aug 13, -0.79 Mt w/w) while hot metal runs at 2.38 Mt/day — import demand is absorbing supply at the margin. Demand-side risk is structural: crude steel output fell 3.1% y/y in Jan-Jul while imports rose 5.9%, and the CME forward curve is flat at $94.99-95.45 through Jan 2027 — no squeeze premium priced. Consensus 2026 average range: $90 (Fitch) to $103 (Macquarie); spot sits at the low end. Buyers hold leverage: negotiate index-linked contracts, defer fixed-price commitments, and cover only near-term needs.
